The Hawaii Star Jiu Jitsu Invitational takes place Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Kauai High School auditorium.
The competition will have six matches scheduled and will feature practitioners from around the state including Kauai, said event coordinator Romolo Barros.
“This is the first time we’re doing it on Kauai. I’ve done a few on Oahu, and I’ve done it on Maui. First time there,” Barros said. “The difference is that it’s more of a pro event, and there’s just six matches.”
What makes this competition unique, Barros said, is that matches can only be won by submission whereas typically competitors can win by points.
“It’s one round of 20 minutes,” he said. “If there’s no submission at the end, then it’s a draw. This is like pro because, the guys, they win trophies and belts and even some money. It’s really for higher belts — black belt, brown belt and purple belts.”
The event is scheduled to begin 8 p.m. Tickets are available at www.hawaiiallstarbjj.com for $20. Tickets will also be sold at the gate for $25.
“It’s kind of like an (mixed-martial arts) event, but it’s for jiu-jitsu. It’s on a stage. The curtains, the lights, the music, it’s almost like it’s a show. It’s different than the regular competition. It’s really for people to see the show,” Barros said.
