HANAMAULU — When a Kalepa Village resident heard the sound of a gunshot early Saturday morning, he didn’t think anything of it.
“There’s hunters in the field next to me and pigs sometimes get through a hole in the fence, so I assumed that’s what it was,” he said.
The man, who didn’t want to be identified, said he got a call from his cousin who’d heard someone died in Kalepa Village.
When police responded to the Hanamaulu apartment complex just before 4 a.m. Saturday, they found two dead bodies in one of the units, according to a release from the Kauai Police Department.
One of the victims was a 40-year-old woman and the other was a 67-year-old man. Their deaths have been ruled as an apparent murder-suicide, according to the preliminary report.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths have not been released, and identities will not be released until their next of kin have been notified and the autopsies have been completed.
Autopsies are expected to be done this week, said Mary Daubert, county spokeswoman.
By noon Saturday, the scene had been cleared, and the neighborhood was quiet.
The neighbor, who was washing his car, said this is the first time something like this has happened in the six years he’s lived there.
“There’s a lot of police officers who live here,” he said.
Officials stayed through the rest of the morning, and the scene wasn’t cleared until around 11 a.m., the neighbor added.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call KPD Detective Eric Caspillo at 241-1908.
Those wanting to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 246-8300.
