Electoral College is the problem
I recently posted on my Facebook page my displeasure with the results of our presidential election. As a member of the LGBT community and an activist for LGBT equal rights, I am truly concerned and fearful of our future under a President Trump. We will not, however, sit back and allow our rights and freedoms to be trampled on. The fight for equality for LGBT citizens, for women, for people of color, and for all people, will continue.
One person who read my Facebook post complained that the “far left” is protesting and refusing to accept the results of the democratic process. I don’t know about the rest of the left, but my inner soul doesn’t so much protest Trump as much as it does what is being called the “democratic process.”
I do not consider the process to be democratic at all. More people voted for Hillary Clinton than voted for Trump but due to our archaic Electoral College system, the person who received the least amount of votes wins the election. And then Paul Ryan gives a news conference saying that Trump has a “mandate” from the people. How can Trump have a mandate from the people when he received less votes from the people than his opponent? It’s time to do away with the Electoral College.
