PUHI — The documentary “Equal Means Equal,” directed by Kamala Lopez, will be shown at a free screening on Friday at the Kauai Performing Arts Center in Puhi.
The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the screening will begin at 6 p.m.
The film examines the inadequacies of the current laws in the U.S. that claim to protect women and presents a strong argument for the urgency of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment.
Following the film, a panel discussion will be led by YWCA Executive Director Renae Hamilton-Cambeilh. Panelists include: Prosecuting Attorney Justin Kollar; Ret. Gen. Mary Kay Hertog; KCC instructor Alexis Erum; and YWCA prevention educator Snow Carapetyan.
A purse sale will also be taking place at the event to help raise funds for the YWCA’s domestic violence/crisis programs and women’s financial education.
The event is sponsored by the YWCA of Kauai and the Kauai County Committee on the Status of Women in recognition of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the YWCA USA’s Week Without Violence campaign.
