LAWAI — Four individuals have been displaced from their Lawai home following a fire that broke out early Tuesday morning.
No one was home at the time and no injuries were reported, according to county reports.
Kalaheo firefighters responded at approximately 3 a.m. to a three-story home on Piko Road engulfed in flames. Neighbors were already attempting to control the blaze when firefighters arrived, but witnesses say the fire spread rapidly.
Crews from the Lihue and Hanapepe stations also responded and were soon joined by personnel from the Fire Prevention Bureau, the on-duty battalion chief, and police.
The fire was extinguished shortly before 6 a.m., but Kalaheo firefighters remained on scene for several hours to monitor hot spots and clear water and debris from the property.
The fire is believed to have started from the first floor of the residence, but the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Fire inspectors consider the roughly 3,000-square-foot home a total loss and estimate damages to the structure and its contents to be $700,000.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross are assisting a displaced family of three and another adult who was renting a unit in the home.
