KAPAA — The Kapaa Business Association livened up its monthly First Saturday with the opening of the 20th annual Coconut Festival at the Kapaa Beach Park located on Niu (the Hawaiian word for coconut) Street.
Vianne Tabata said the roots of the festival stems from the Royal Coconut Coast and the festival celebrates all that is coconut with coconut crafts, coconut games, foods based on coconuts, and contests with coconuts.
These were embraced by the local crafters, artists, and entertainers who were on hand along with faith-based organizations and artists offering children games and an opportunity to write messages on coconuts.
The festival overflowed to Sunday with more entertainment and contests.
“At least it didn’t rain,” said Greg Askew of Ono Pops who were dispensing their Coconut Dream offering to help beat the heat.
