LIHUE — Great Harvest Bread Co opened Wednesday at the location adjacent to Payless Shoes in the Kmart shopping area.
“This is an excellent addition to the Kukui Marketplace,” said Wade Lord, Kukui Grove general manager. “Great Harvest Bread Co. will offer a unique comfortable atmosphere and delicious freshly-made products the community will enjoy.”
Owned and operated by Christine and Stanley Camara, the family bakery will offer fresh breads, treats, and sandwiches.
“Those are Dillon Cookies because Great Harvest is based out of Dillon, Montana,” said Janet Tatarka of Great Harvest.
Great Harvest operates 220 stores in 46 states. The Kauai store is the fourth in Hawaii, the first on Kauai.
Christine said she was a consumer of Great Harvest, and after moving back to Kauai, decided to open her own bakery.
“My mission is to educate consumers about the joys of bread making and the phenomenal tasting products,” she said. “We believe it is all about the customer experience, and we want to provide a comfortable social gathering place away from home and work — a neighborhood spot that bakes delicious products from scratch.”
Great Harvest bakeries grind premium Montana wheat berries using a classic stone mill into whole-wheat flour daily.
The signature bread is the Honey Whole Wheat, a bread crafted from five simple ingredients — water, honey, salt, fresh yeast, and wheat flour. Other breads available on rotation include Cinnamon Chip, Autumn Apple, Everyday Bread, and Cheddar Garlic.
Other items from the bakery include granola, oatmeal and pancake mixes, and cookies, muffins, scones, and for canines, dog treats.
Eventually, Great Harvest hopes to have a breakfast sandwich offering along with a special, local blend of Kauai coffee.
“It is my goal to make a difference in our community,” Christine said.
The bakery will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Friday. It is closed on Saturday.
