Sami Lin Kihenepualehuamakanoe Ofisa, 10 will portrait Hawaiian Princess Victoria Ka’iulani (1875-1899) at this year’s Princess Ka’iulani Keiki Fest in Hanapepe on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Ms. Ofisa is a sixth-grade student at Ken Yen Learning Center and an active member of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leina’ala.
She will be entering the event at 11 a.m. on “Skyboy” a gentle horse provided by Lorna Ouderkirk Her portrayal will include lovely costumes, leading the children’s parade, a hula, reading a storybook, and being the guest of honor at her own birthday party in Storybook’s Sparky’s Garden.
The event is free and open to the public. Families will enjoy safe and secure event locations at the Hanapepe Hawaiian Congregational Church and Storybook Theatre in Hanapepe as the road will be closed for the duration of the event. The church will be offering a food court with delicious local food.
Parade costumes in all creature shapes and sizes will be provided at no cost to the children. Among the costume offerings are the beautiful forest bird capes donated by Koke’e Natural History Museum for the event parade and the Nylon Zoo costumes made especially for Storybook Theatre’s children’s events by international festival artist Evelyn Roth of Adelaide Australia. There will be other hands on activities for young people provided by area non-profit organizations.
Special Keiki Fest guests include: Opening Oli by Kumu Kauai’iki, Joyful Noise Taiko drummers, parade percussionists Cary Valentine and friends, Mistress of Ceremonies Mauliola Cook and this year the event will host the Scottish bagpipe player Greg Ellsworth in honor of Princess Ka’iulani’s Scottish heritage.
Sports teams, cheerleading squads, scouts and other children’s organizations are encouraged to enjoy Kauai’s only children’s street parade in historic Hanapepe town. And all children are invited to attend Princess Ka’iulani’s Birthday Party that will be held in Sparky’s Garden with lot’s of cake, games and prizes for her highness and everyone who come.
