LIHUE — The weather gauge at the Lihue Airport reported record-breaking heat over the weekend. On Saturday, the temperature gauge reached 88 degrees, 1 degree more the previous record for that day, according to the National Weather Service of Honolulu.

On Sept. 24, 1959, 1979, 1981 and 2013, Kauai hit 87 degrees.
Pete Donaldson, a meteorologist with NWS of Honolulu, said the increase in temperature Saturday was caused by clouds clearing for an extended amount of time.
According to the 10-day forecast for Lihue, next Wednesday will be the hottest day at 85 degrees. Today and next Thursday are expected to reach 83 degrees.
