LIHUE — Kamaluhiwahiwa Martinez and Daniel Martinez are the winners of the Nene Awareness Student Art Contest hosted by the Kauai Nene Habitat Conservation Plan.
The contest was open to students grades K-12 and the challenge was to create a work of art around the theme of raising awareness about the Hawaiian goose in celebration of Nene Awareness Day, celebrated Monday.
Students from seven schools submitted entries to the contest.
Kamaluhiwahiwa, first grade is the winner of the grades K-3 category and Daniel took top honors in the fourth to eighth grade. Both students are from Kawaikini New Century Public Charter School in Lihue.
