LIHUE —The attorney for a defendant accused of shooting an elderly Omao man in the head and killing him said he needs time to obtain expert witnesses for his client.
The trial for 43-year-old Giovanni Lictawa Corpuz, a Koloa man charged with second-degree murder, was scheduled to begin this month, but defense attorney Mark Zenger said he needed more time to follow up on investigations.
The trial date was moved to Jan. 17, 2017.
Corpuz is alleged to have shot and killed 88-year-old Amby Cruz of Omao in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day in 2014.
About a week later, Corpuz was detained in Taiwan while en route to the Philippines, according to reports. He was then extradited back to Hawaii to be arraigned before Fifth Circuit Court Judge Randal Valenciano.
