POIPU — Ali Carone was enjoying her first day of work at the LocoCoco Shave Ice trailer parked outside the Kukuiula Store in Poipu.
“Ice and coconut mo’ betta,’” she said with a smile that comes with the excitement that comes from the first day of work.
Thomas Oliver is the owner of LocoCoco Shave Ice, a custom-made trailer that dispenses local style shave ice in an assortment of flavors, a special LocoCoco in a coconut half shell, cold coconuts, as well as non-shave ice Lip Bliss and Blessed Bee Honey.
“The syrups are all natural,” Oliver said. “I use natural fruit purees, organic sugar, or Kauai Blessed Bee honey. I always wanted to sell something which was 100 percent natural, and now, I have a product I can be proud of.”
The regular shave ice comes in a recycleable paper cup with a choice of two flavors, choosing between a selection that includes mango, strawberry, lychee, guava, blood orange, mandarin orange, kalamansi, raspberry, or lime.
Ice cream is available as an add-on.
Shave ice is also available in a coconut half shell for additional cost.
“We get plenty coconuts,” Oliver said. “I climb for my own coconuts, and there is a lot out there.”
Hours for the shave ice truck are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.
Oliver said he likes being parked in front of Kukuiula Store.
“I was born near here and we know the Kuribayashi family from the time we were growing up,” he said. “My brother Matthew has Makai Sushi inside the store, and Daniel Hertado of Da Crack is our good friend. We all grew up together.”
