Janis Loo
Janis Loo entered the gates of Heaven and passed into eternal life on June 30, 2016, after an 18-month battle with ovarian cancer.
She was raised on Kauai, graduated from Waimea High School and Intermediate School, Kansas State University (BS), and University of Hawaii (Masters in Public Health).
She lived a full life and was married to Garrett Sullivan for 33 years. They traveled the world and raised five beautiful children.
Being a mother and volunteering for many organizations were her greatest passions. Her final gift was her body to University of Hawaii Medical School Willed Body Program.
Her Celebration of Life will be held on Kauai at Lihue United Church (4340 Nawiliwili Rd, Lihue HI 96766) on Friday July 8. Visitation from 4 to 5 p.m.; Service at 5 p.m. Reception will follow in the Parish Hall and on Oahu at First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu at Ko’olau (45-550 Kionaole Road, Kaneohe HI 96744) on Saturday July 9. Visitation from 9 to 10 a.m.; Service at 10:15 a.m. Reception to follow in the Grand Ballroom.
She is survived by her husband, Garrett Sullivan; son, Patrick Sullivan; daughters, Jennine Sullivan, Susannah Sullivan, Rose Sullivan and Jade Sullivan.
Also, parents, Arthur and Dorothy Loo; brother, Jere Loo (Donna); sister Laurel Loo (Clyde Fujikawa) and one niece and three nephews and many friends who served as brothers and sisters in Christ.

James ‘Jim’ Leroy Dawson
James (Jim) Leroy Dawson of Kalaheo, Kauai, Hawaii, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2016 with his loving family at his side. He succumbed to complications from the sudden onset of stage 4 cancer. Born in Garden City, Kansas on October 27, 1942, he served in the Navy right out of high school, and continued serving his country at PMRF for 35 years as Program Manager of Operations. He continued to consult for the Department of Defense until 2014.
Jim met his wife, Verlene, in San Francisco while in the Navy, where he swept her off her feet with his charm, handsome good looks and Navy uniform. They were married June 17, 1962. Jim and Verlene moved to Kauai in 1970.
Jim was the kind of guy you would think was running for Mayor. He was extremely social and loved being around people. Jim was the founding member of the “Traveler’s Den Golf Club,” was in the “Men’s Kiahuna Golf Club,” was President of the West Kauai Rotary Club, played tennis for years, and loved watching all sports, especially the Broncos, and coaching his son, Randy, in Little League baseball.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Virgel Leroy and Alice Mae Dawson of Las Animas, Colorado, and his daughter Teresa Michele Dawson Thompson.
Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years, Verlene; son Randall Scott (Mary) Dawson; two loving granddaughters Danika Jae’lene Thompson and Kierra Raiko Thompson; their father Herb Thompson; his brother, Robert Virgel Dawson, and his niece Kia Maree Brennan.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00, Friday, July 8, 2016, at Joe’s on the Green, Poipu, Kauai. Casual Aloha attire is requested.

Brian Frank Lopes
Brian Frank Lopes, 50, of Lihue, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children at Straub Hospital on June 19, 2016. He was born in Kailua, Oahu on Oct. 2, 1965, and grew up in Lihue.
Brian is preceded in death by father, Frank Lopes Jr.; maternal grandparents, Frank and Eleanor Carlos of Kailua, Oahu, and fraternal grandparents, Frank and Rose Lopes of Kailua, Oahu.
Survived by loving wife, Michelle; beloved children, sons, Tyler Lopes, Bradley Lopes, Kapono Lopes, Nainoa Lopes, and daughter Kamaile Lopes. Also, Kaina Christian, Kelani Griep, Jordan Lee and Lono Montgomery; mother, Maureen Lopes of Lihue; sisters, Deanne “Candy” (Mike) Lind of Wailua Homesteads, Sheri (Tom) Maier of Washington, Roxanne (Dave) Daugherty of California, Maile (Ira) Silva of Lihue; brother, Darin (Marie) Lopes of Lihue; fatheri-in-law, Lambert Aqui of Kapaa; mother-in-law, Joan Cliff of Poipu and aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Brian is a graduate of Kauai High School and UH Hilo. A handy man by trade, he was a very good, hard worker, very friendly and always smiling. Brian was such a good and loving father to all his children and a loving and wonderful husband. We have many wonderful memories of him which we all will cherish.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday, July 7, 2016, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary at 3168 Poipu Rd., Koloa. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Services start at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park.

Kiyoko Murashige
Kiyoko T. Murashige of Lihue, Hawaii passed away at the age of 95 on May 29, 2016, at Hale Kupuna in Omao, Hawaii. Born on Oct. 28, 1920, in Kealia, Hawaii, she was a retired secretary for the American Lung Association, Kauai Office.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Coney Murashige. Survived by sons, Calvin (Gail) Murashige of Lihue, Dwight Murashige of Waipahu, and Glenn Murashige of Annapolis, Maryland; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and brother, Daniel (Suzie) Takata of Honolulu.
Private services were held and the family requests no koden.

Anthony Arden Wong
Anthony “Bruddah” Arden Wong of Las Vegas, born on Feb. 25, 1951, in Waimea, Kauai, passed away on May 18, 2016, at the age of 65.
He is preceded in death by his father, Antonio “Tony” Wong; mother, Marjorie Kua Wong; sisters, Evelyn “Suku” Baniaga and Marjorie Wong and brother, Darrell Wong.
He is survived by his wife, Paulette Kanoa of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Anelle (Burt Rapanot Jr.) Brun of Kaumakani; son, Arden (Dianne Coley) Wong of Santa Rose Beach, Florida; sisters, Antoinette (Lawrence) Daos of Pearl City, Charmaine (George Perreira Jr.) Manuel of Waimea, Walnita (Fred Sr.) Aviguetero of Waimea, and Jacqualene Wong of Sacramento, California; brothers, Byron (Joveen) Wong of Waimea and Chadwick (Betsy Moonihoawa) Wong of Hanamaulu; brother-in-law, Patrick Baniaga of Kaumakani; grandsons, Dalton (Cassandra Owen) Brun of Kekaha and Dallas Brun of Kekaha; granddaughter Qiyrah Rapanot of Kaumakani; great-grand- daughters, Tiah and Teily Brun of Kekaha and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunties, and uncles.
Friends may visit with the family on July 23, from 11 a.m. to noon at Kauai Veteran’s Cemetery Committal Shelter in Hanapepe. Services noon to 1 p.m. Casual attire requested. Private burial at a later date.

Peggy Mikie Higashi Yaka
Peggy Mikie Higashi Yaka of Hanamaulu passed away at home on June 23, 2016, at the age of 93. She was born in Lihue, Kauai on Jan. 17, 1923, and retired as a Sales Clerk with Kauai Stores.
Preceded in death by her parents, Sakichi and Kiku Higashi; husband, Leslie Yaka; brother, Masayuki Higashi, York Higashi and Harry Higashi; sister, Edith Higashi; grandson, Cameron Yaka; great-grandson, Keean Nuivo.
Peggy is survived by sons, Clinton (Tuesday) Yaka of Idaho, Jason (Linda) Yaka of California; daughter, April (Willie) Nuivo of Hanamaulu; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, David Higashi and Richard (Misa) Higashi; sister-in-law, Olinda Higashi and caretaker, Shan Resinto.
A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held on July 23 at Lihue Hongwanji Mission with visitation from 10 a.m. and services at 11 a.m.
Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Yaka family with arrangements.
Gordon Saffery
Gordon “Kealoha” Saffery of Princeville, Kauai passed away on June 24, 2016, at the age of 61. He was born on Feb. 17, 1955, on Kauai. Gordon was previously employed with Princeville Operating Company.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Irene “Jenny” Saffery; brothers, Joe Mersberg and Calvin Saffery; sister, Georgette “Mapuana” Harrison.
Gordon is survived by sisters, Milwarde “Nani” Metcalf, Vallendee (Fred) Wong, Rose Angeles; sister-in-law, Tamar (Kamala) Mersberg and his hanai sisters, Pauline and Lorraine Harada; brothers, Jack and Lewelyn Fischer and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services on July 16, 2016, at Waioli Huiia Church.
Visitation begins at 9:30, service to start at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Hanalei Community Cemetery.
Damon Makaio Perreira
Damon Makaio Perreira of Kalaheo, Kauai, passed away on June 20, 2016, at the age of 39. Born on Sept. 17, 1976, on Kauai he was a sole proprietor.
He is preceded in death by parents, Joseph and Agnes Perreira.
Survived by his companion, Roxanne Belmonte, Kilauea; sister, Charlene “Momi” (Marvin) Lum, Kapaa; brother, Joseph “Jay” (Cheryl) Perreira Jr., Lihue; daughters, Isabella, Iolana, Hali’alani Perreira; son, Kamalei Perreira and numerous aunties, uncles, cousins and friends.
There will be a Celebration of Life on July 31 at Hanapepe Tennis Court Pavilion from noon to 4 p.m.
Family suggest casual attire in lieu of flowers family suggest leis are welcome.
