Letter for July 2, 2016
Voters should give peace a chance
After reading Alden Alayvilla’s interesting article about how our Democratic Party elected “representatives” advocate turning our quiet little tourist island into a nuclear missile site, I thought I would share a thought to all of you who are going to vote Democratic this next election.
My name is Gordon LaBedz and I chair a coalition called Oceans4Peace.org. Oceans4Peace was set up to educate our island about the impacts of the RIMPAC war “games” that start in July. Our view is that constant war preparations only make war more likely, that these huge scale military actions have grave social and environmental costs that are simply not worth the so-called “defense” benefits.
Our Democratic party representatives, state and federal, support his dangerous and harmful waste. Now they want to drive nukes down Kauai’s congested roads, ostensibly to protect Honolulu from an attack from tiny little North Korea. We need to get rid of these politicians who don’t represent our aspirations for peace and a clean environment.
The reason we vote Democratic is because we fear that the Republicans will be worse. I get it: George Bush Jr., Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. It seems like the Republican Party has become the “Wing Nut” Party. Lots of us don’t vote because it doesn’t seem to matter. There are other strategies: Vote, but write in None of the Above (NOTA) or vote Green or Libertarian.
If we keep re-electing the lesser of two evils, we are always going to get an evil. Please only vote for people who represent your aspirations for a peaceful, clean world that protects the rights of nature.
Gordon LaBedz
