KOKEE — Saturday is the opening of plum harvesting season at Kokee State Park and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources is reminding people permits are required.
Permits will be available starting at 7 a.m. Saturday at the Kokee State Park headquarters, or at the State Parks office in Lihue weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is no cost, but the forms must be completed and dropped in the box after harvesting.
Harvesting is permitted between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. in designated areas and each person will be allowed to take up to five pounds of plums per day for personal consumption. Other conditions will be specified on the plum harvesting permit and a short pole with a net will make harvesting easier.
“This year the plum crop is poor and small,” said David Tsuchiya, Westside Kauai Parks supervisor.
