HANALEI — Get Ready Halele’a is a disaster preparedness event scheduled today at the Hale Halawai ‘Ohana o Hanalei Community Center. The event begins at 4 p.m. and is a chance for island residents to get up to speed on the Hanalei to Haena Disaster Resilience Plan.
The plan includes updated maps of hazard zones and procedures for evacuation and disaster preparedness.
“Because the North Shore is likely to be isolated from help for 3 to 7 days, people will need to be able to take care of themselves for a period of time,” said Makaala Kaaumoana, executive director of the Hanalei Watershed Hui. “Our plan provides information on what to do, where to go and what to have in case of a hurricane, tsunami or flood.”
The plan was facilitated by Dr. Sarah Henly-Shepard and coordinated by the Hanalei Watershed Hui and the Hanalei to Haena Community Association.
Get Ready Halele’a will also provide entertainment by Shilo Pa, door prizes and surf films produced by local youth.
