KILAUEA — Crystal Bilyeu of the Kauai Mini Golf in Kilauea said the mission of the farmers market is to support local agriculture by providing a marketplace for local Kauai agricultural producers, food artisans, and the community.
The market meets two days a week — Mondays from 2 p.m. until dusk, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in a lot located a stone’s throw from the parking lot of Kauai Mini Golf in Anaina Hou Community Park.
Jose Layaoen, 90, is one of the vendors, dispensing fresh coconuts described as “cold, cold, cold.”
“I only do coconuts, now,” Layaoen said. “I used to have vegetables, but I too old to grow.”
Bilyeu described the Kilauea market as a farmers’ farmers market where the community gets to know the farmers so they know where their food is coming from.
