Some local female footballers will be giving cancer the boot this month.
The fourth annual Breast Cancer Awareness Soccer Event is scheduled Saturday, June 11 at Lydgate Park. The fundraiser is hosted by local league Kauai Island Ladies Adult Soccer.
“It’s just a fun event to raise money and raise awareness for breast cancer,” said founder and co-coordinator Emily Medeiros.
Players at least 15 years old can sign up. The fee is $20 per player.
Those who sign up will be put into teams of nine and play in a round-robin style tournament. Those who wish to enter as a team can do so.
“This year, I’m trying something different. I’m letting people know that if you have a team or people that they want to play with, that’s totally fine,” Medeiros said. “For women that don’t (have a team), we’ll put them on teams when they come.”
Proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. About $800 was raised in last year’s event, Medeiros said.
“Some people, they’ve been really generous. They don’t just pay the minimum amount. They just write a check, and that’s awesome,” Medeiros said.
She added the fundraiser has close ties to her. Her mother passed away from breast cancer. She also has an aunt who is a breast cancer survivor and has been in remission about three years, Medeiros said.
“She (my mother) passed away in June of 1999, which is why we have it in June — in her memory. And I have an auntie that had breast cancer. I do it to kind of honor them, as well,” Medeiros said.
Registration begins 8 the morning of the event, and play begins at 8:30.
