As the state wrapped up its Memorial Day weekend, Kauai Area Complex Superintendent William Arakaki announced that 10 Kauai schools provided 957 lei for the Memorial Day ceremonies.
“It is great to see Kauai students, families, and staff participate in honoring the women and men who served our country,” Arakaki said.
Eleele Elementary School topped the contribution with 273 lei followed by the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School coming in with 193 lei.
Schools were invited to participate in the making of lei for more than 50,000 graves of men and women.
Lei collected was used for the 2016 Memorial Day Service at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific as well as other veterans’ cemeteries on Oahu, and the Neighbor Islands.
Other contributions came from Kalaheo Elementary School (47 lei), Kapaa Elementary School (113 lei), Kapaa High School (40 lei), King Kaumualii Elementary School (19 lei), Kekaha Elementary (9 lei), Kilauea Elementary School (108 lei), Koloa Elementary School (19 lei), and Waimea Canyon Middle School (136 lei).
