LUMAHAI – A Wainiha man was arrested on Sunday morning after he left the scene of a traffic crash that resulted in injuries. The crash occurred just after midnight on Saturday along Kuhio Highway in Lumahai.
According to police, a Chevrolet pickup truck failed to negotiate a turn along the highway and crashed into the back of the Toyota pickup that was parked along the northbound shoulder. The crash resulted in serious injuries to the driver of the Toyota pickup, who was standing next to his truck at the time.
The driver of the Chevrolet fled the scene on foot and was later identified by police as 27-year-old Tyrone Gerhart. Gerhart turned himself in to authorities on Sunday morning and was booked for first-degree Negligent Injury and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
He has since been released pending investigation.
The victim, an 18-year-old Kapaa man, was initially transported to Wilcox Hospital with multiple injuries. He was later transported to Queen’s Hospital where he remains in stable condition.
The crash remains under police investigation.
