POIPU — Lizzy Bad wrASS of the Echo City Knockouts proved to be pivotal for the redshirts Saturday during the roller derby triple header hosted by the G.I. Renegade Rollerz at the Southside Sports Center.
Lizzy came on early, piling up points over the Maui Roller Girls in the opener, and despite a strong surge from the rollers from the Valley Isle, the Echo City Knockouts from Kona on the Big Island finished victorious, 105-95.
Lizzy was pitted against G.I. Renegade Rollerz’s The Carnie in the second bout, the Kauai host team taking advantage of an early-game infraction which sent Lizzy to the Kauai Beer Company penalty box.
This window saw Carnie pile up a 15-0 lead before the redshirt came back onto the ring.
The G.I. Renegade Rollerz lead disappeared, and in a scoring flurry by Echo City Knockouts’ Jillbait, the redshirts took the lead and held on for an 83-51 lead at the break.
Food trucks and between-bout (and time-out) entertainment kept the audience satisfied. It was the first time a bout was played in the covered facility on a waffle floor, which proved to be slippery and added another challenge in addition to keeping the opposition from scoring.
The Garden Island Renegade Rollerz is a flat track roller derby league. The team practices Sundays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Kapaa Hockey Rink at the Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex.
