More bike paths would be beautiful
In regard to Raley Peterson’s letter (“Why Not Use Haul Cane Roads?” TGI, May 9), I say keep on beating that horse — it’s not dead yet! Using cane haul roads would alleviate traffic and provide an alternative route when there is a traffic accident. I especially like the idea of using cane haul roads for bike and pedestrian paths. Imagine being able to commute through the Haupu Range Tunnel from the South Shore to Lihue by bike!
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has helped to establish over 240 bike paths and trails in the United States. These are trails that were created from abandoned railroad tracks. We might do something along the same lines with our abandoned cane haul roads. In closing, I would like to include a poem written by my student Jaleah Rapozo-Carveiro.
B ike paths are the key to clean transport
I would love to see more bike paths on
K auai because it’s much safer and people would get more
E xercise which would make peddlers healthier
P athways could also benefit walkers and the runners too and the
A ir would stay cleaner
T raffic jams would be reduced
H ospitals would have fewer patients
S tudents could ride to school
I n the morning and after school and could have a
S afe way home
A nother reason why bike paths would be
G reat to have is people would not be
O bese because of lack of exercise
O besity is not good, it can cause
D iabetes
W hich means that they have a risk of
A death sentence at a
Y oung age
T herefore we need to take care of
O urselves so that we can live an extraordinary
G lorious life also if we do this then our
O zone layer would not be destroyed by the fuels that go up into the air. It benefits everyone. I think that this is a first step to healthy lives on our earth.
