You don’t have to travel to Korea to see traditional royal palaces. Right under our nose stands Center for Korean Studies at the University of Manoa: a unique building with design influenced by Kyongbok Palace Throne Hall Kunjongjon where king’s coronation and court rituals were held.
There is a detached building also designed based on the Hyangwonjong Pavilion located in the middle of a lotus pond at Kyongbok Palace in Seoul. The Center for Korean Studies broke ground on July 1, 1974, and was completed in December 1979. You can visit the campus and visit the CKS and marvel at the Korean carpentry, painting and stonework.
Many materials were brought from Korea including the green tiles for the roofing. With all the colorful exterior painting, photos often turn out well so get those selfie sticks ready!
