PUHI — The St. Francis Saints of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, visiting for some preseason boys volleyball, triggered a scrimmage tournament involving all four member schools of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation on Saturday.
“St. Francis was coming over to get in some preseason scrimmage,” said Kaipo Kealalio, the Island School athletic director. “We were going to play them. They were also scheduled to play Kapaa and the Kapaa coach suggested that maybe we could put together a tournament involving all the schools.”
Kapaa High School was first on the varsity floor, taking its first series over Kauai High School, 2-0. Kauai High has a new face in the coaches’ box — Enoch Aana.
Armed with this confidence, the Warriors faced off against the Saints, taking the first set 25-12.
But the Saints rebounded to take the next two sets for the 2-1 win.
“This is all good,” Kealalio said. “We’ve got the junior varsity teams playing on one side of the gym and the varsity teams using the other half. Waimea was already scheduled to be on Oahu so its varsity team couldn’t be here. But they did send their JV team. Island School has both the JV and varsity teams and we’ll be up next.”
Kealalio said there was talk about doing this with more off-island teams next year.
“It’s nice,” he said. “But it is hard work. It’s going to take more than myself to pull a tournament like this together. We’ll see what happens.”
The KIF starts its boys volleyball season March 15 when Kapaa travels to the Kauai High School gym and Waimea travels to the Island School facility. The junior varsity games start at 5 p.m. and the varsity matches start no earlier than 6:30 p.m. at both sites.
