HONOLULU — A case involving a man who allegedly robbed a Kapaa pharmacy with a Colt semiautomatic BB gun while wearing a Halloween mask has been transferred over to the federal government.
Walter Mills, 42, was charged on Feb. 12 by the Attorney General’s office just days before his Kauai trial was set to begin.
On Feb. 19, Mills appeared before Magistrate Judge Barry Kurren after being transferred from the Kauai Community Correctional Center.
The court found that Mills was a danger to the community and considered a flight risk, according to court records. He is being held without bail in Honolulu.
According to the two-page complaint, Mills is charged with robbing “an employee of the Kapaa Pharmacy … against his will, by means of actual and threatened force, violence, and fear of injury to his person and other persons in his company.”
Mills is said to have entered the pharmacy shortly after 12:30 p.m. Sept. 19 “wearing a long sleeved hooded sweatshirt with a zipper front, pants and distinctive white mask with black paint around the eyes,” according to an affidavit in support of the complaint.
He was allegedly caught on store surveillance video threatening a store employee while holding a weapon, records said.
He allegedly demanded Oxycontin, oxycodone, morphine and methadone — in total about 1,900 pills, according to court records.
After a four-day investigation, Mills was arrested by Kauai police after a minor vehicle accident. After obtaining a search warrant, police found a Colt BB gun, a plastic mask and several Oxycontin pills.
A preliminary hearing is set for March 3.
