LIHUE — Spring football is coming.
A doubleheader featuring athletes from Division I and the Division II is tentatively scheduled for Vidinha Stadium on March 5.
Nardo Nacnac, a coach with the Lihue Patriots Pop Warner team of the Kauai Pop Warner Football League, was helping with workouts and practice Tuesday at the Nawiliwili Park.
“We have more than 24 players in the elementary division,” Nacnac said. “There are another 28 players in the middle school division. That’s the biggest registration we’ve had.”
A registrar with the Kauai Football League said the athletes started practice and conditioning at the end of January, and are ready to take the field. Games are scheduled through May 21 at both Vidinha Stadium and the Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex in Kapaa.
“Kapaa has a pretty big turnout as well,” Nacnac said. “I believe there are 35 players in the elementary division, and nearly 40 players in the middle school division. Having Kapaa High School win the Kauai Interscholastic Federation title really helped their enrollment, and the coaches are from the Kapaa football team. This really gives the players an edge if they want to play football for Kapaa High School.”
Nacnac said some of the Kauai High School football coaches have helped with the Lihue middle school athletes as well.
The March 5 opener will have the younger players from Lihue hosting Kapaa in a 4 p.m. kickoff. That match will be followed by the middle school athletes from Lihue hosting Kapaa in a 6 p.m. start.
On March 12, Pearl City from Oahu will have its Division I team meet Lihue in a noon kickoff followed by the Division II team meeting the Lihue Division II at 2 p.m.
Later in the afternoon, Kapaa Division I will host Waianae Division I of Oahu in a 4 p.m. kickoff followed by the Kapaa Division II hosting Waianae Division II in a 6 p.m. kickoff.
