KALAHEO — Angeline Nizo of the Kauai Lynx scored 22 of the team’s 25 points in its 25-15 win over the Rebels of Hanamaulu on Tuesday night as the county hosted its Division II basketball games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Nizo, who earlier played with the Division I athletes, commanded the court in not only scoring, but forcing turnovers, and fighting for her share of boards.
“I would have tried something else,” said Clarence Sales, Kauai Lynx coach. “But you don’t get an athlete like this every day. She’s once in a blue moon.”
Helping Nizo, Kate Lynn Colipano netted a pair in the second period and Joleina Cumlat had a digit in the fourth period.
Jaley Medeiros topped the Rebels’ scoring with six points followed by Skylyn Fagarang, Zylah Blackstad, Janessa Parallag, and Jaclyn Oshio adding pairs. Marissa Matsushige added a digit.
Earlier in the evening, the Supersonics got a game-high 15 points from Raindell Fernandez and nine points from Rayson Jarquio in its 40-13 win over the Kauai Ballers. John Russel Batuyong added six points, Javin Bagaoisan-Kaneakua finished with four points, and a pair from Brayden Heu-Greenbaum rounded out the victory.
Blake Heresa lit up the twine for the Kauai Ballers with nine points from three treys falling in the fourth period. Zyren Wade-Padilla and Matthew Estrada added pairs in the effort.
Sage Cua finished with eight points and Kelson Rapozo added six points to lead the Lihue Lakers to a 32-5 win over Team Lihue B in the second boys’ match. Austin Renaud finished with four along with Daniel Kaili Pa, Isiah Sales, and Ian Rapozo. A pair from Ian Raquel rounded out the win.
Kyler Cabebe and Hansleo Carlos led the Team Lihue effort with a bucket each and Kai Riopta was one-for-two at the foul line for the effort.
The county’s youth hoops light up the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center Thursday with three games on tap starting at 6 p.m. when the Kauai Lynx faces Kaulupono in a girls’ match. The Kauai Ballers tip off against Papalina White at 7 p.m. and Papalina Orange closes the night against the Supersonics in an 8 p.m. match.
