Kapaa and Kauai High Schools’ varsity girls soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in the third place game of The Queen’s Medical Center Girls Soccer Championships – Division II state tournament in Waipio on Saturday.
“Coming off a hard game yesterday, we came in with a different mindset,” Kapaa head coach Mytra McKeague said in a phone interview. “Just go out there and have fun.”
Warriors junior midfielder Natalie Devin scored the opening goal at the 20th minute.
“(We) absolutely enjoyed the game. All players got playing time today. We got everybody in,” McKeague said. “That’s always a plus.”
Red Raiders junior midfielder Britney Ehia got the equalizer for Kauai High at the 56th minute.
“First half, both teams were just having fun,” Kauai High head coach Joe Cassler said by phone. “They got ahead early, and it woke our girls up a little bit. Then we started playing, and came back and equalized early in the second half.”
Cassler added though it would have been preferable to have a definitive winner, it wasn’t the priority.
“Yeah, it would have been nice. But at the same time, both teams were pretty beat up. We played long minutes this week,” he said. “For us, it would have been nice to finish it. But at the same time, the girls weren’t disappointed at the outcome either.”
Kapaa finished the season with a 11-2-2 record, going 10-1-1 in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation regular season and 1-1-1 in the Division II tournament.
“We have a great group of girls, and great families that support them,” McKeague said. “It made (the season) a lot easier. It was a great experience.”
Kauai High ended with a 9-2-4 record, with a 7-2-3 KIF record and going 2-1-1 at states.
“It was a really fun season,” Cassler said. “Luckily for us, both us and Kapaa showed really well at states. I’m proud of the girls that I coach. I’m proud of the product that they put out on the field the last four games of the season. It’s a good way to walk away from the season. Kauai should be proud of both teams.”
Pac-Five of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu defeated Makua Lani of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, 5-nil, Saturday in the fifth place game. Hawaii Preparatory Academy of the BIIF defeated Kamehameha Schools–Hawaii, also of the Big Island, 1-nil, in the Division II title game.
