LIHUE — Maddie Hoesel, 13, finished three days of swimming to earn Swimmer of the Meet honors at the Mokihana Aquatics Age Group with Distance meet which wrapped up Saturday at the Kauai High School pool.
“Congratulations to Maddie Hoesel for her second Swimmer of the Meet award,” said Mokihana Aquatics coach Orlando “O” Anaya. “This is actually her third, but she and Sammy Stokes were co-swimmers of the meet at a trials two years ago. I remember that because it was the only time Mokihana had a tie for the award. I hope this is only one of what should be many more great swims for both of them.”
Hoesel finished the three-day meet perfect, with improvements in all of her events. Her top showing came in the 1,650 freestyle where she touched the wall at 22 minutes, 26.17 seconds, an improvement of nearly a minute, 53.17 seconds, off her seeded time. She also posted improvements in the 1,000 freestyle (21.23 improvement), the 500 freestyle (15.74 improvement), and the 400 Individual Medley (11.91 improvement).
Stokes, 13, was also perfect, but coming in second to Hoesel in all four events. Stokes posted improvements in the 1,000 freestyle (36.49 improvement), the 500 freestyle (25.86 improvement), the 400 IM (12.20 improvement), and the 1,650 freestyle (44.87 improvement).
“Sammy’s improvements were amazing,” Anaya said. “While making Hawaii B times may not seem like a big deal, it is — especially considering that Sammy just aged-up to the toughest age group, the Girls 13-14. Sammy, you go, girl!”
Alfred Auger posted a perfect meet, bettering his 200 freestyle in 11.96, Thursday when he touched at 3:23.67. He bested that swim Saturday, touching at 3:23.43. He also posted improvements in the 200 IM (3.60).
“A special shout-out has to go to Alfred Auger, 9, as the only swimmer to swim his 200 free faster on Saturday than on Thursday,” Anaya said. “That is not an easy accomplishment.”
Elijah Adams, 9, was perfect with his greatest time gain coming in the 200 IM (19.12) for a Hawaii A time standard.
Madhav Collins-Doijode, 12, had his greatest gain in the 500 freestyle, touching at 9:36.83 for a 246.33 improvement, and Katharine Hoesel, 11, Maddie’s younger sister, finished with a 45.69 improvement in the 500 freestyle (8:56.74).
Nevaeh Ibanez, 11, finished with AA times in all her events, her biggest improvement coming in the 500 freestyle (6:42.81) where she came out 41.34 ahead.
Leigh Idica, 10, finished perfect with two AA times, but her biggest showing came in the 500 freestyle (7:14.67) for a 28.87 improvement. Idica was joined by Chloe Inouye, 9, who finished with AA times in her perfect showing, her strongest swim coming in the 200 IM (3:05.28) for a 9.15 improvement.
Ian Raquel, 10, one of three Mokihana swimmers qualifying for the Sparky’s invitational in March, finished with three of four AA times, his biggest gain coming in the 500 freestyle (7:34.86) for an improvement of 46.46.
Kamaira Silva, 11, is also heading for the Sparky’s, and posted a 4.25 improvement in her 200 freestyle (2:29.11), an AA time.
Tyler Tanaka, 11, the third Mokihana swimmer heading for the Sparky’s on the Big Island, finished perfect with AA times in four events, his strongest swim coming in the 400 IM for an 8.30 improvement.
“This is a great way to start our competition season,” Anaya said. “I’m really looking to these next six months as I believe we will have several swimmers break out. The long hours in the pool are paying off with grand results, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us.”
