KILAUEA — Phil Baclayon of the Hanakila basketball program said Tuesday night’s games were the first to be played at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center since the center reopened following repair work.
“Be sure to clean your shoes,” Baclayon asked arriving players and spectators. “This is the first time we’re playing in Kilauea. The floors have been refinished and we want to keep it clean.”
The floor refinishing and replacement of portions deteriorated by weather was part of the scope of work done to the center after it was closed for repairs in November.
At a cost of $294,230, the repair work included a new concrete sidewalk, canopy and flashings along the south-facing exterior of the gym, weather seal on the north and south doors, gutter and roof improvements and electrical work.
Normally used for basketball practice by the Hanakila basketball players, the closure of the gym sent the players to practice at the Kilauea Elementary School’s outdoor court.
Mary Daubert, county spokeswoman, said the facility was reopened at the start of February. The Tuesday night games were the first played since the gym reopened.
“The project addressed long standing issues, and now, the public will be able to enjoy that facility for many years to come,” said Lenny Rapozo, director of the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation.
