WAILUA — Beau Hossler of No. 8 Texas carded five birdies in the blustery easterly winds Wednesday at the Wailua Golf Course to lead the No. 8 ranked team to a 12-under 276 during the opening round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament.
Hossler finished with a five-under par 67, two strokes ahead of teammates Gavin Hall and Scottie Scheffler, who are tied at three-under 69.
James Moran-Hortan of the host University of Hawaii, also shot a 69. The Rainbow Warrior picked up his game on the back nine after crossing at one-over par, including three straight birdies from Nos. 9 through 11 en route.
UH posted its best showing at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in years following a first round 291 posted by its A team, led by Moran-Hortan at three-under par and Skye Inakoski carding an even par.
This put Hawaii in fifth place followed by its B team finishing at 305 for 16th place in the 17-team field, led by freshman Sam Schwartz who finished at three-over 75, tied for 43rd place.
Kauai boys Pono Tokioka (76) and Bryden Salvador (80) are competing for the Hawaii B team along with Justin Chu (76) and Chad McLay (78).
Five-time defending champion California is No. 2 in the standings, led by Collin Morikawa, tied for fifth place overall with a two-under 70, at 288, 12 strokes back of Texas A&M.
Washington State is tied for third with Arizona at 290, two strokes back of California.
The tournament continues with the second round today with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. at the Wailua Golf Course.
