PUHI — A two-week promotion that ended Monday to encourage pet adoptions at the Kauai Humane Society found new homes for 29 animals.
Laura Lee, KHS development director, said the “The One” program was a success. It even resulted in a new family for Kai, a three-year-old brindle mix that had been at the shelter since October.
“Her demeanor toward children is what made the owner fall in love with the dog,” Lee said.
The One is a Best Friends and Hallmark Channel Valentine’s adoption promotion. Between Feb. 1 and Feb. 15, KHS offered $14 adoption fees for adult cats and dogs. Fees usually range from $60 to $100 for puppies and adult dogs, and $25 to $60 for kittens and adult cats.
It’s the older animals that end up staying at the shelter longer.
“Adult animals are a lot harder to adopt,” Lee said.
All told, 14 dogs and puppies, 14 cats and kittens, and one rabbit were placed with owners during the two-week period. About half were adult dogs and cats.
One dog adopted through The One was Anastasia, a six-year-old Chihuahua mix. A couple took the shy, timid dog on a field trip in December and fell in love with her, Lee said, but they were about to move to Texas from Iowa and couldn’t take her yet.
They stayed in contact with KHS and on Feb. 1, the first day of the promotion, adopted Anastasia. She was put on a plane recently and sent overseas to her new home.
“They said she’s doing really well,” Lee said.
Next up for KHS is the “Fast and the Furriest” festival set for April 24 at the shelter. It will include games, contests, pet products and activities for kids.
