The Kapaa High School girls soccer team earned the No. 2 seed for The Queen’s Medical Center Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls Soccer State Championships, Division II bracket, which starts Feb. 17 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.
Led by coach Mytra McKeague, the Warrior women soccer players finished its Kauai Interscholastic Federation play last week as league champions.
Kauai High School girls soccer, finishing the KIF season as the runner-up in league play, is unseeded at the Division II state play, according to an announcement by the HHSAA late Wednesday night.
Kauai High School opens state play, Wednesday against Leilehua High School in a 3 p.m. match. Should the Red Raiders win that bout, the team advances in the top-seeded bracket, meeting Pac-Five on Feb. 18 starting at 3 p.m.
With its No. 2 seed, Kapaa enjoys a bye on Feb. 17 and will take the field at 3 p.m. Feb. 18, facing the victor of the unseeded match between Makua Lani and Waianae.
Top seed in Division II girls soccer is the Hawaii Preparatory Academy, and Kalaheo High School earns the No. 3 seed. According to Natalie Iwamoto of the HHSAA, Pac-Five cannot be recognized as the No. 4 seed in the tournament because HHSAA seeding criteria states that only league champions can be seeded.
Other teams participating in the Division II state championship tournament include Waialua High School, McKinley High School, Seabury Hall, and Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii (island).
Top seed for the Division I bracket goes to the Mililani High School Trojans with the Iolani Red Raiders getting the No. 2 seed. Hilo High School, a preseason visitor to Kauai, is seeded No. 3, and Baldwin High School of the Maui Interscholastic League, is the No. 4 seed.
Other teams participating in the Division I play include Waiakea, Campbell, Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama, Moanalua, Kamehameha Schools-Maui, Castle, Pearl City, and Kapolei high schools.
