LIHUE — Power outages on the Lihue Airport runway caused a 45-minute delay Wednesday for travelers in Honolulu.
Kauai’s Gina Lobaco, who was in Honolulu for work, said passengers were on the tarmac about to leave for Lihue at 6:20 p.m. when officials announced the plane couldn’t take off because the runway lights in Lihue weren’t working.
“It wasn’t a big inconvenience, but posed questions about what procedures are in place when the power goes out,” she said. “Suppose a big flight was coming in from the Mainland and didn’t have the fuel to circle around until the problem was fixed.”
The Hawaiian Airlines flight, which was full, arrived in Lihue at 7:45 p.m., she said.
“The people on the plane were a mixture of commuters and holiday goers, and nobody seemed to too upset about it,” Lobaco said.
A request for a comment from the Department of Transportation on Kauai was not answered by press time Thursday.
