Five hula dancers from Kobe, Japan traveled to Kauai to present one number Saturday during the Leilani Rivera Low hula hoike at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.
“We dance in Japan,” said Rika Terashini, one of the five dancers. “We are here for five days, but we only dance to one number, tonight.”
The annual hoike or exhibition of Leilani’s Hula Halau students, was embelished by the addition of craft vendors, and local-style food.
“We enjoyed the steel guitar festival, today at the Courtyard by Marriott at Coconut Beach,” said Taraya Middleton of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. “We came to do the week-long Beamer family music camp. The hoike just happened to be during our free time.”
Leilani Rivera Low and her husband Darryl also operate the Ka U‘i O Ka ‘Aina Cultural Center in the Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa.
