NAWILIWILI — Natalee Zyskowski’s youthful enthusiasm and zest “for anything artsy” inspired Vicky Ramos.
Ramos, a certified crochet instructor, will lead a crochet class for young people ages 9 through 12 during spring break, March 16 through 24 at the Twisted Turtles Yarn Shop in the Harbor Mall.
Natalee, a fourth grader, will be serving as a junior helper.
“She is a self-starter in crochet,” Ramos said.
Cindy Vea, Natalee’s mother and a teacher at the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School, said Natalee likes anything artsy, and is a vendor at Hanapepe Art Night, where she offers a line of twister rings for 75 cents apiece.
“There are some nights were she does more than a few dollars,” Cindy said.
The twister rings helped the Wilcox Student pick up her first crochet hooks.
“I was watching videos one day and saw this cactus character,” Natalee said. “Maybe I could learn how to do that. I got my first hook after finding a video on YouTube.”
“I spent maybe two weeks trying to figure it out,” Natalee added.
Ramos said students in the crochet class for beginners will receive a bucket containing the supplies they need to complete three projects during the classes from 9 a.m. to noon. There is a fee.
“I’m very excited about being a junior helper,” Natalee said.
Cindy said Natalee has a knack for art.
“She always paints or draws anything,” Cindy said. “She’s made several yarn lei, and is making charms out of this clay I used to work with when I was young. I could never make anything like what Natalee is doing, today — pineapple charms, and a heart project.”
