LIHUE — The Kauai Police Department is accepting applications for those interested in becoming a police services officer, an emergency services dispatcher or a school crossing guard.
A KPD police officer performs a variety of law enforcement, crime prevention, investigative and other specialized duties.
Those selected to be a part of a recruit class will participate in an intense training period, which is designed to teach each recruit the techniques and procedures of police work.
Candidates for employment must be at least 20 years of age at the time of filing the application, and at least 21 at the time of appointment.
Applications are due on Feb. 8, and all applicants will be required to pass a written and physical exam.
An emergency services dispatcher performs a variety of difficult clerical work in a central communications center, receives training in radio dispatching methods and procedures, and performs other related duties as required.
Applicants must have a combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of radio telephone or telephone switchboard operation, or dispatching, public contact, or clerical/technical supervisory work experience. Applications will be accepted between today and Feb. 9.
School crossing guards are currently needed at the following schools: Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle; Hanalei Elementary; Kapaa Elementary; Kekaha Elementary; Kilauea Elementary; King Kaumualii Elementary; and Koloa Elementary.
A crossing guard ensures the safe and orderly crossing of children and other pedestrians at crossing locations near an assigned school.
The position requires at least two hours of work per day, including one hour prior to the start of the school, and one hour at the end of the school day. Recruitment for this position is ongoing.
