Happy New Year … again! Chinese New Year is just around the corner, Feb. 8 to be exact. Living in 2016 may sound futuristic, but for the Chinese calendar 2016 sounds very archaic! For those following their calendar, it will soon be the year 4714! So, with a culture whose modern calendar has been around nearly three millennia longer than our Gregorian calendar, it can make one wonder what other fascinating differences does this long-established culture have to offer?
We were fortunate to meet the author of “All About China: Stories, Songs, Crafts and More for Kids,” Allison Branscombe, when she personally brought us her books. Her book is a very attractive and engaging introduction into the basics of Chinese culture and history. It is excellently illustrated by Lin Wang and published by the high-quality company Tuttle. Even though her target market is young people around late-elementary through middle-school, the book is presented in a manner that is accessible to practically everyone. It is also visually appealing to little ones while an adult reads to or along with, and yet is still filled with enough substance that adults will find themselves interested as well.
Upon our first perusal, there were facts we had no idea about. Each colorful page offers something fun, exciting and educational. Not only are there songs to sing and crafts to make as the title promises, but we also learn about both ancient and modern Chinese history, their myths, building methods, many festivals, their language, health practices, art, games, cuisines, family life and traditions, and even recipes you can make!
Especially here in Hawaii, where Chinese influence has had a lasting impact in the history and culture of the islands, this book is a great Chinese New Year gift for those special someones who love to learn!
