Carmen Mateo Bostick
Carmen Mateo Bostick of Waimea, Kauai passed away on Jan. 9 2016, at the age of 80 peacefully with her loving family at her bedside at Kauai Veteran Memorial Hospital.
Born on June 26, 1935, in Kilauea, Kauai, she was a retired educational assistant on the island of Kauai. A graduate of Waimea High School, she was involved with the Catholic Church through lecturing, teaching, and various organizations.
She is survived by three sons, JJ (Stephanie) Bostick, Kekaha; John (Joni) Bostick, Kekaha; Paul (Amanda Vegas) Bostick, Hanapepe; daughter, Cynthia (Michael Hallinan) Bostick, Makakilo, Oahu; seven grandchildren, Ariel Schaefer, Texas; Samantha Bostick, Kekaha; Galen Bostick, Hanapepe; Lexcy Bostick, Hanapepe; Kenui Bostick, Hanapepe; Nakoa Bostick, Hanapepe; Dominic Bardi, Honolulu; two brothers, Barney (Jane) Mateo, Eleele; Benny (Bea) Mateo, California; three sisters, Mary (Ritchie) Gentry, California; Rose Michael, Kekaha; Youngie (Dean) Akita, California; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, including her extended family with beloved partner of over 23 years, Kevin McMahon, his nine brothers and one sister and their families whom she loved dearly and visited in Wisconsin.
Celebration of Carmen’s life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at Waimea Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, Kauai. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Mass at 10 a.m. Celebration to follow, no burial.

Sheila Pi’ilani Freitas
Sheila Pi’ilani Freitas “Poko” of Hanapepe Valley, passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Jan. 8, 2016, at the age of 48. Born on July 26, 1967, in Lihue, Hawaii, she was a home caregiver with Endless Love Care.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Damien Freitas Jr.; is survived by her father, Damien Freitas Sr. and mother, Rebecca Kali; brother, Delbert (Vanessa Romo) Freitas of Kekaha; sisters, Diann (Keith) Delima Sr. of Eleele and Nicol (Dean) Nonaka of Hanapepe; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at the Sacred Hearts Church in Eleele on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with services to follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be held at the Hanapepe Hawaiian Cemetery.
The family suggests casual attire and flowers are welcomed.

Frederick Rapheal Carrillo
Frederick Rapheal “Raffy” Carrillo, a retired bus driver with the County of Kauai, Department of Transportation, passed away on Jan. 15, 2016, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
He is preceded in death by his father, William K. Carrillo; mother, Virginia K. Carrillo; sisters, Wilma Meyer and Luana Young and nephew, Stanley Farias.
Raffy is survived by his children, daughters, Ruth Naomi (Michael) Taboniar of Anahola, and Violet (Dondi) Carrillo of Oahu; sons, Mark (Jolyn) Carrillo of Alaska, and Jason (Keli’i) Carrillo of Alaska; as well as, Debra (Michael) Poe of Hanamaulu, Coreena (Kalei) Like of Alaska, Doreen (Ricky) Brun of Kalaheo, Dal Olivas of Kalihiwai, Lori Olivas of Hanamaulu, April (Ian) Christian of Kapaa, and Esther (Puna) Strom of Maui; his long-term companion, Ahmoi Kawamura; 27 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; brother, William K. Carrillo Jr.; and numerous, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016, at the Anahola Beach Park. Services will begin at 10 a.m. on the beachside.
The family suggests aloha attire. Flowers and leis are welcomed.

Takayo Otsubo Hamada
Takayo Otsubo Hamada, 98 years old female of Omao, Kauai passed away on Jan. 12, 2016, at Hale Kupuna. Born on March 10, 1917, in Koloa, Kauai. Retired Homemaker
Preceded in death by her daughter, Jaynice Muranaka.
Survived by her three daughters, June (Harry) Minakami, Gail (Herbert) Chun, Sue (Patrick) Victorino, Sr.; one sister, Mildred Konishi, nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Private services were held. No Koden. Borthwick/Kauai Mortuary.
Betty Yaeko Shimogawa Ihara
Betty Yaeko Shimogawa Ihara of Kalaheo passed away on Dec. 31, 2015, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 84. Born on June 29, 1931, in Kalaheo, Kauai, she was a sales clerk with Slim’s Appliance in Kalaheo and also a seamstress.
She is survived by her four daughters, Sharlyne (Michael) Fallon of Florida, Tamra Lea (Warren Amaral) Ihara of Kauai, Ellarye (Ron) Ramos of Florida, and Bekki Dee (Mark) Malapit of Kauai; five grandchildren, Justin (Traci) Ihara, Jonah Malapit, Karlyee Rye Malapit, Micah Malapit, and Marley Ramos; one great-grandchild, Audryn Ihara; brother, Kenichi “Stupe” (Mary) Shimogawa of Kauai; sister, Dorothy Soares of Oahu; two sister-in-laws, Daisy Shimogawa of Oahu and Edith (Jim) Matsuda of Oahu; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial services for Betty Yaeko Ihara will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at the Hanapepe Veteran’s Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with services to follow at 2 p.m. Interment will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific Upper Committal Court on Friday, Feb. 12, 2016, at 9:30 a.m.
The family suggests casual attire.

Cory Michioka, 58, died Dec. 29, 2015, at his home in Springhill, LA.
He is survived by his daughter, Jasmine Michioka Doria and granddaughter, Jada; his parents, Allen and Hilda Michioka, brother, Blaine (Jeane) Michioka; sisters, Cheryl (Stan Okuhara) Michioka and Lauren Michioka.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, SSG Richwell Doria.
Visitation with the family will be 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Kauai Veterans Center on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016. Services to follow.
Haruko Ishii Otsubo
Haruko Ishii Otsubo of Lihue passed away on Dec. 13, 2015, at the age of 88. She was born in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii on March 27, 1927, and was a dedicated homemaker.
Preceded in death by her husband, Taketora Otsubo; sons, Glenn and Burt Otsubo.
She is survived by her daughter, Elaine (Kenneth) Miyazaki of Oahu; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; brother, Takeshi (Reiko) Ishii of San Diego, California; sisters, Tomiko Kabazawa of Kalaheo, Lillian (Roy) Makizuru of Koloa; numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2015, at Koloa Jodo Mission with visitation from 10 a.m. and services beginning at 11 a.m.
Family graciously declines flowers and suggests casual attire.
Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Otsubo family with arrangements.
