LIHUE — The Honolulu Police Department said Tuesday that Richard Leibman was arrested about 1:30 a.m. on the beach fronting Halekulani after a brief foot chase.
The Hanalei man sometimes referred to as “The Jesus Bandit” had escaped the Hawaii State Hospital Saturday.
Three agencies, including the Kauai Police Department, were seeking the public’s assistance in locating Richard Leibman, 38, who walked out of an unlocked door while staff was transitioning another patient. Honolulu Police Department and CrimeStoppers are also searching for Leibman.
Leibman, considered dangerous, was chased by staff after he escaped about 6:40 p.m. They lost sight of him when he entered an area with thick brush.
Leibman has a criminal history in Kauai, which includes burglary, theft, resisting arrest, escape and assault against a law enforcement officer.
