LIHUE — The Honolulu Police Department said Tuesday that Richard Leibman was arrested about 1:30 a.m. on the beach fronting Halekulani after a brief foot chase.
A Hanalei man oftentimes referred to as ‘The Jesus Bandit’ escaped the Hawaii State Hospital Saturday by walking out of an unlocked door.
The Kauai Police Department, CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Richard Leibman, 38, who walked out of an unlocked door while staff was transitioning another patient.
Leibman, who is considered dangerous, was chased by staff after he escaped about 6:40 p.m. They lost sight of him when he entered a heavy brush area.
He has a long criminal history, including unlawfully entering, burglary, theft, resisting arrest, escape and assault against a law enforcement officer.
In February, Leibman failed to appear at a status hearing in court. A bench warrant for $10,000 was issued for his arrest. Police later located him in a parking lot in Poipu. As he ran, Leibman kicked officers and tried to scale a wall before he was caught.
In another incident in 2013, Leibman was scheduled to fly to Texas with his mom, when he disappeared at the airport. Police asked the public for assistance and he was later located.
