Kamalu Road dangerous due to speeders
Kamalu Road in Kapaa has become the shortcut of choice to avoid the traffic jam in the town, as well as avoid the Wailua bypass. The speed limit on Kamalu Road is 25 mph, and literally no one obeys it. Speeds vary from 30 to possibly 80 or more.
I am a senior citizen, and I walk my dog every day on the road. During the recent heavy rains, the shoulders were extremely muddy, so I was forced to walk on the road. One day I was passed by a car which not only did not slow down, it was only about a foot away from me. If I had stumbled or lost my footing, who knows what might have happened.
Last Monday I contacted the police and told them about the speeders and my concern that it is only a matter of time before someone is injured — or worse. I am extremely grateful for the quick response to this call. For the next two days, there was a police presence on the road, and I understand several people were ticketed. They were also here today. While I appreciate this most sincerely, it was obviously not enough to slow people down. The speeds during rush hour continue to be well in excess of 40 mph, and at times during the evening, it sounds like some drivers are traveling at close to 100 mph.
This is a potentially deadly situation which must be addressed.
