It’s not everyday that we get a phone call from famed musician, singer, songwriter and author, Carly Simon (thanks Meadow!). She humbly called our bookstore in Hanapepe and asked if we would carry her book. We are glad she called and naturally, we said “Yes!” She is as friendly and gracious as you would imagine her to be. And we agree that her book, “Boys in the Trees — A Memoir,” a bestseller in the New York Times, deserves its accolades.
Her memoir reveals the person beyond the celebrity, starting from her youth and spanning the first three decades of her life. Revealing how the multitude of equally wonderful and disheartening events sowed the seeds that would germinate into her creative expression through her music and poetry that would eventually be enjoyed and remembered by many generations.
So, what do you think you know about Carly Simon? Sure, you might know that she was once married to James Taylor, but here is a fact you probably didn’t know: she is a daughter of the co-founder of the huge publishing company Simon & Schuster. What an amazing and unique crowd of people she grew up around. Did you know that Carly used to suffer terribly from stage fright and stuttering? You may wonder then, how did she overcome these crippling hindrances?
What makes this book so wonderful, other than its fun and flowing prose, is that she lets us inside to experience on a personal level how singular and intimate moments transformed her life and how we are able, if we want, to harness them into expressions that not only liberate ourselves, but others as well. All of her classics we know today stem from this catharsis.
This candid, funny and revealing memoir is well worth the read! (Thanks for calling, Carly!)
