KILAUEA — As some of Kauai’s residents may know, the North Shore Pharmacy in Kilauea is a compounding pharmacy. Compounding is the creation of personalized medications.
By compounding prescriptions, the North Shore Pharmacy is able to accommodate patients who may have allergies to certain dyes, chemicals or are unable to take medication orally. In which case, the pharmacy would create a cream or liquid form. Through compounding, the pharmacy is able to cater to all patients and their specific needs, said owner Mike Latif.
As of November, the Kilauea North Shore Pharmacy has become Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board certified. They are the first pharmacy on the island to become both sterile and non-sterile PCAB certified, as well as the second in state, Latif said.
The Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board is a nonprofit cooperation created by eight national pharmacy organizations. It is a system of standards, testing quality processes, in compounding pharmacies.
In order to become PCAB accredited, there are numerous standards the pharmacy must uphold, Latif said. Some of these standards include conducting frequent trainings for all pharmacist and technicians, maintaining a non-contaminated workspace, and only using chemicals from the highest reliable sources.
The North Shore Pharmacy sought out to become PCAB accredited so that they may show their patients their dedication to uphold the highest standards of quality, Latif said.
As a celebration for its 27-year anniversary, the pharamacy is planning a sale this month. There will be giveways, prize drawings and it will kick off some new programs for this year.
“We are constantly evolving bringing new programs and tools to help our customers live a more healthier life with emphasis on preventinve therapies,” Latif said.
