WAILUA — Kapaa High School paddling teams swept the Saturday Kauai Interscholastic Federation paddling regatta at the Wailua River to claim the lead in all division standings.
“There were some close races,” said Chris Ang, the KIF trainer at the meet. “Waimea claimed victories in the preliminary heats in close races, but Kapaa came back to dominate the finals.”
Kapaa now leads in all of the divisions heading to Saturday’s KIF championship regatta.
“Saturday is the championship race,” said Mia Pauletto, the KIF paddling official. “It is all about the points right now.”
Kapaa holds the lead in the junior varsity standings with 18 points each in the JV girls, JV boys and JV mixed divisions challenged by Kauai in the JV girls with 14 points. Kauai holds 10 points each in the JV boys and JV mixed divisions.
The varsity race is tighter with Kapaa taking the lead in varsity girls at 14 points followed by Kauai at 11 points, and Waimea just a points back at 10 points. The Warriors also control the varsity boys standings at 15 points, challenged by a strong Waimea crew at 12 points and Kauai at eight points. Kapaa remains undefeated in the varsity mixed division at 20 points followed by Waimea at 10 points and Kauai at five points.
Saturday’s championship regatta is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start at the Wailua River.
