LIHUE — Kapaa girls soccer’s Nigeria Williams normally works to prevent balls from getting into the net as goalkeeper for the Warriors.
Late in the game Saturday at Vidinha Stadium, Williams doffed her goalkeeping gear, and garbed in her No. 20, headed a corner kick, the ball floating past the traffic at the goalmouth and triggering jubilant cheer from both players and fans.
Williams’ goal iced a 6-0 win by the Kapaa girls over the Waimea High School girls to wrap up the day’s slate of soccer at Vidinha.
Joining Williams, Kapaa got goals from Kainani Moniz, team captain Kaisha Davis-Caberto, Brianna Binder, Vanessa Hernandez and April Barnes in the win.
The nightcap saw Kauai High School and Island School split its series in some physical matchups, the Voyager men scoring a goal in both halves for its 2-0 edge over the Red Raider men, and Kauai girls scoring twice in the second half for its 3-0 shut-out over Island School.
Brandon Beydoun and Josh Miller found the net for Island School boys. Eris Fani was carded for dissent and Emi De La Mora earned a yellow for unsportsman play. On the other side of the field, Branden Remigio and Jarran Takekuma earned cards for unsportsman play.
The Kauai girls saw Taylor Pacol getting its start with a goal in the first half. The Red Raider women followed that with goals from Aleigha Scovel and Anaiah Christensen in the second half with a yellow card being issued to Michaela Licke for taunting.
Island School next hosts Waimea on Tuesday at Vidinha Stadium with the varsity girls kicking off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity boys at 7 p.m.
Kauai High School will take on Kapaa High School Wednesday at Vidinha Stadium when the varsity girls kick-off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity boys starting at 7 p.m.
