LIHUE — The Kauai High School junior varsity soccer teams remained undefeated in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation following wins over Waimea Thursday night at Vidinha Stadium.
Gabriel Simmons led the Red Raider JV boys to a 7-1 final over Waimea by scoring twice. Ryan Banasihan, Jonathan Benitez, Logan Noice, Noah Ruiz, and Shane Takeuchi also found the net in the win.
“This is a good start for the KIF season,” said Kauai coach Martin Steinhaus. “We’ve scored 14 points over three games, and conceded just one.”
That concession came in the second half when Galen Agtunong fired off a penalty kick in the box.
“The boys are open (to learning and coaching),” Steinhaus said. “They’re very supportive of each other. They know their limitations, and know they have to work hard. But the main thing is they’re having fun. We play a possession-style game, all while having fun.”
The fun overflowed onto the girls’ field as the Red Raider JV girls walked off with an 8-1 win during the nightcap.
Kahela Ventura, scoring more than a dozen points over the span of three games, opened the scorebooks early by finding the net in the 15th and 18th minutes.
The scoring flurry continued when Kuikamanao Kanahele sank a goal at the 20th minute followed by Shayna Shigematsu at the 25th minute.
Kyla Bandsma closed the half with a goal in the 31st minute. She capped the scoring flurry with her second goal that rattled the twine in the 59th minute.
Earlier, Halee Sommer welcomed the second half with a goal in the 49th minute and Seidre Kealoha-Albarado iced the victory in the 60th minute.
In a scenario that resembled the JV boys’ game, Waimea notched its goal on a penalty kick from Kaira Kelekoma in the 32nd minute.
“We were feeling ourselves, tonight,” said Lorrie Lee “Bobby” Rapozo. “We lost a player to the varsity team and we just play people in different positions to see what works, especially since we next face Kapaa. We always work on new positions and skills so the players are able to switch. The main thing is the girls have fun in the process.”
The Kauai JV teams enjoy a week off before facing Kapaa next Thursday at Vidinha Stadium. The JV girls open the second round by taking the field at 5 p.m. followed by the JV boys.
