LIHUE — A recent assessment of residential materials disposed at county refuse transfer stations and in refuse carts has prompted officials to issue a reminder about the proper disposal of household hazardous waste.
Proper disposal methods, which are provided on most product labels, should be used at all times as products sold in containers labeled caution, warning, danger or poison become HHW when discarded.
Even a small quantity of HHW that is left over from a home project could result in noxious vapor emissions or spontaneous combustion when co-mingled with mixed waste, according to a press release. This could lead to negative impacts including damaged equipment, delays in service or long lines at the transfer stations, or sudden facility closures.
HHW items should only be used for the purpose it was designed, and any remaining product should be stored at home until a semi-annual HHW collection event is held.
The next HHW collection event is scheduled on April 9 and April 10.
