Akira Williams of Island School broke a Kauai Interscholastic Federation swim record while attaining two state qualifying swim standards Saturday during the KIF qualifying swim meet at the Kapaa pool.
Williams dropped the record in the 200 yard freestyle set by Keenan Anaya of 1 minute, 51.30 seconds in 2006 when he touched the wall at 1:50.32. He went on to chalk up a qualifying swim in the 100 freestyle (49.89).
Williams was one of two Voyager swimmers to card qualifying swims in the field of 17 swim standards on the day. Jackson Evans of Island School picked up his state swim in the 50 freestyle (23.13).
Kauai High School continued to dominate the field, ending the day with nine of the 17 state swims. Jack Machorek and Zachary Safford continued to set the pace for the boys, Machorek getting state swims in the 200 freestyle 91:52.06), a second place finish to Williams, and the 100 freestyle (51.52), a second place finish, while Safford pocketed state swims in the 200 freestyle (1:52.24) with a third place finish, and the 100 freestyle (51.52), also a third place finish in the meet.
Kaira Kaaihue got state swims in the 200 freestyle (2:05.24) and the 200 Individual Medley (2:25.86) and was joined by Ava Wagner who picked up her state swim in the 500 freestyle (5:39.70).
Kauai High School relay teams finished with state swims in the boys 200 medley relay (1:49.38) and the boys 400 freestyle relay (3:35.24).
Kapaa High School rounded out the state qualifying standards with swims in the girls 200 freestyle relay (1:56.05), the boys 200 medley relay (1:53.85), a second place finish at the meet, and the boys 200 freestyle relay (1:40.47).
The KIF qualifying meet continues Saturday when swimmers hit the water from 10 a.m. at the Kauai High School pool.
