PUHI — Junior forward Lyndsie Kashima scored at the 17th minute to put the Red Raiders ahead.
Kauai High School’s varsity girls soccer team defeated Island School, 1-nil, Wednesday in Puhi. Kashima took a couple of touches while making a run toward goal before firing from inside the penalty area.
“I thought we did good because our passing linked up much better than our prior game. We just connected more,” Kashima said.
Kashima had a chance at a second goal at the 47th minute. Her ball found the net, but the score was disallowed because she was called offside.
“I was mostly stoked because getting the 1-0 lead, it would pump up my team more,” Kashima said. “We had the momentum to score another goal, but I was offsides. I was kind of mad about that.”
Kauai (2-0-1 KIF) had the majority of scoring chances in the first half.
“We settled down earlier than we had in the past. We started playing our possession ball. That led to early chances for us,” said Red Raiders head coach Joe Cassler. “If we play this way, we’ll be competitive on Saturday. It should be a good game. It always is against Kapaa.
“Any win is a good win in the KIF. It’s going to be very competitive this year. We’re just looking forward to Saturday now,” he added.
Island School had a chance at an equalizer in the 80th minute. Voyagers junior striker Ali Temme made a run on the near side and crossed the ball into the penalty area toward sophomore striker Emma Kelekoma, but the ball went straight to the Red Raiders goalkeeper.
“First half, I felt we came really flat-footed. It wasn’t until they scored that we realized that we’re playing a game,” said Island School head coach Colby Ayonon. “The girls brought it in at half time and talked about what we needed to do to correct the situation. I think we did really well in the second half. Unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalize on an opportunity. Really satisfied in the second half, but we just to to (play) for 80 full minutes.”
Kauai junior defender Chase Tokita drew a yellow card for profanity, and senior forward Aleigha Scovel was carded for unsporting behavior.
Kauai will play Kapaa at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Vidinha Stadium. Island School (1-2-0 KIF) will play Waimea at 7:30 p.m. Saturday also at Vidinha.
